GEORGE GROOT
GROOTS LEVEN

I visited Dutch theatre-maker, comedian, song-writer and professor George Groot (82) for de Volkskrant at his home in Amsterdam. Battling cancer he expected just a few more weeks to live. Afraid of death he wasn’t anymore, he told me he lived a good life and while spending time he was outgoing, utterly funny and charming. We had a very honest conversation while I was photographing him and he spoke to me about his career, but most of all about his interest in men and this part of him he explored after being together with his wife ‘Anke’ for over 45 years. George had a very lively, youthful spirit and this twinkle in his eyes when he spoke about topics he loved. He wasn’t afraid to ask me critical, vulnerable questions and we got along well.

We promised each other to get in touch again after publication of the article, but sadly he passed away a few hours before release on the 14th of May.
